Heise.de Covers ULX5M-GS FPGA Module with GateMate Chip

The German technology news portal Heise.de has published an article about the ULX5M-GS FPGA module, a compact development platform built around the GateMate A1 FPGA from the German semiconductor company Cologne Chip.

The module is designed to work with Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 (CM5) I/O boards, providing developers and makers with a flexible way to experiment with programmable logic while using the widely adopted Raspberry Pi ecosystem.

The ULX5M-GS, developed by Intergalaktik, integrates the GateMate A1 FPGA along with 64 MB of DRAM and a Gigabit Ethernet controller, enabling a variety of hardware experiments and embedded applications. The platform is part of Intergalaktik’s broader work on accessible FPGA development boards based on open hardware principles.

One of the notable aspects of the platform is its open-source approach: the hardware design and documentation are publicly available, and the board can be used with open FPGA toolchains, supporting experimentation, research, and educational use.

The article also highlights that the FPGA can implement custom designs such as a 32-bit RISC-V processor (FemtoRV), demonstrating the flexibility of the platform for hardware development and prototyping.
